According to Wiki -“Telnet (teletype network) is a network protocol used on the Internet or local area networks to provide a bidirectional interactive communications facility. Typically, telnet provides access to a command-line interface on a remote host via a virtual terminal connection which consists of an 8-bit byte oriented data connection over the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).”

Unlike Windows XP ,Windows 7 and Windows Vista do not include Telnet client by default.Telnet needs to be enabled via the Programs and Features. Here is How to do it.

Enable Telnet Client on Windows

You open a Telnet session by typing Telnet either on the command prompt or on the Run dialog box.If your computer does not have Telnet client installed you will get the following error message.

This message is displayed in both Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

To enable Telnet go to control panel and select programs and features.Select Turn Windows features on or off.

This will open a box with many programs which includes Telnet.Just select Telnet and tick the checkbox to turn it on.

Now you should be able to run telnet from the run dialog box or command prompt.

Suppose you want to try any flavor of Linux such as Ubuntu or Knoppix but do not want to take pain of installing it.The pain is caused mostly due to difficulty in installation because you want to keep your Windows Installation Intact. While there are Live Bootable CDs available which can run the OS on the fly, they do not provide the optimal experience. They are also limited in the sense that you cannot install any other application on the live running OS.

The other method to try these Operating Systems is using Virtual OS managers. What they do is to produce an environment where an operating system can be installed on top of your current native Operating System. Here is a brief introduction to such softwares.

Installing Virtual Operating System on top of your existing OS

There are some popular virtualization managers like Microsoft’s Virtual PC,VMware workstation and Virtual Box form Sun.

Virtual Box from Sun Microsystems

Virtual box is actually a collection of various virtual machine programs. In their own words-

With VirtualBox, you can run unmodified operating systems — including all of the software that is installed on them — directly on top of your existing operating system, in a special environment called a “virtual machine”. Your physical computer is then usually called the “host”, while the virtual machine is often called a “guest”.

Virtual box runs on almost all operating systems and supports almost all of them as Guest operating system too.

What happens when you install a guest operating system using Virtual Box?

when you install virtual box and configure it to install a guest OS ,it creates a virtual Hard Disk, allocates a predefined amount of RAM from your memory and uses your Processor’s virtualization capability(if it has) to make an environment suitable for installing a new operating system. All this is done in a very sophisticated manner so that your current OS does not know that any more OS is installed on top of it.Also virtual box handles all processes so that you can communicate between your host and guest OS.

How to use Virtual Box

Download Virtual Box (it’s FREE) and install it.Upon starting you will get a welcome screen as shown here-

Click on new.You should get ‘New Virtual Machine Wizard’

In the following window shown in right above, you have to write the name of the guest OS,say My Linux if you want to install Linux as a guest OS.Then select the type of OS and version from the drop down menu.

In the coming screens you will need to configure base memory you want to allocate to your virtual OS and a virtual Hard disk to be used by the guest OS.When you have configured it you will get the final windows as the following-

Just click on start and you are ready to go.It will ask for an installation media which you can select as an ISO file or CD/DVD ROM.Now install it as you normally install any OS on a new computer and enjoy.

Do you know that you can recover the files you have deleted accidently or by will, even if you have cleared your Recycle Bin.

Recover Files is a Freeware program to do just that.It scans the hard disk for deleted files which can be recovered based on the condition of deleted file.

How a Deleted File is Recovered?

When you simply delete a file ,it goes to recycle bin, from where you can recover it.When you delete it even from the recycle bin or shift-delete a file,Windows marks the space occupied by the file as free and hence we feel that the file has been deleted but it’s just buried in the hard disk. This buried file if unmodified may be recovered by software which search for such files.

When you add/modify some files in the hard disk, the space marked as free is overwritten hence the condition of buried file may become unrecoverable.

Use “Recover Files” for File Recovery

Using “Recover Files” is very simple.Upon launching it it shows the complete drive listing of your computer.Just select the drive from which you want to recover a file.Click analyze. Now you will be presented with a list of all the deleted files in that drive with the condition of the file as you can see in the picture.

Select the one which you want to restore and click Undelete from the top menu.

Since it will give a large number of files which are deleted ,you can filter your search by specifying the file name or size of the file you want to recover.

A good free utility if you have a practice of always pressing Shift-Delete to delete a file.(Newbie Note-Deleting a file by pressing Shift+Delete key does not send the file to recycle bin but deletes permanently)

Download Recover Files now.

Even if you are not a geek,it’s good to know which of the programs you have installed are currently accessing your internet. Many people don’t know at all that some program keeps updating themselves at the background and can kill you with a heavy data usage bill,if you are on a limited data usage internet connection. Also you never know you are a victim of botnet or say a Trojan is downloading something at the background.

Hence it is important to keep an eye at the processes which are using your Internet Connection. Here is a simple and Freeware Utility to monitor your network traffic.

Simple tool to Monitor network traffic and see which app is using the network

As you can see in the picture you get a list of the TCP/UDP connections on the
system, along with the process which has generated this connection and to where it is connecting.

Geeks are familiar with the “netstat” command which almost does the same thing. It presents a better GUI and is good for anybody not comfortable with command prompt. If you are still a command line fan,it also includes TVCcon which is the command line version of the tool.

It also has good contextual tools where you can see process properties and kill the connection.

Not everybody can decode what a process does but it is for sure that they can get a hint that this program is using the Internet connection and can kill it if it is an unwanted application.

The program does not need installation hence you can carry it in your USB drive anywhere you like. Moreover it comes with a help file .

You got a CIF file from an Internet download or a BIN file from your friend who gave it to you saying it was a movie-it can make you puzzled if you don’t know how to open it.

These files are basically “images” of complete CD/DVD and conventionally can only be opened by CD/DVD burning applications. But many times you need only to watch the file and not burn it.Then you should know how to open them without burning. Here is a simple method to open them using a freeware application -MagicISO.

WHAT THESE FORMATS ARE?

In simple terms they are complete replica of a CD/DVD .They are created CD/DVD burning applications by copying an entire disc in such a way that it becomes a single file even if the CD/DVD contains multiple files.

How to open these files-

These files are mostly used by CD/DVD burners. Here is a simple Freeware utility which can be used to open these files.

MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM Manger

In this program you get ‘Magic Disc-a Freeware. The main task of this program is to mount the CUE/BIN/CUE /ISO file as a virtual CD/DVD.And thus you get the file as if it is being read by your CD/DVD ROM.

How to use the program

Just install the program.Upon installation it will add an extra CD/DVD ROM drive on your “My Computer’ area.So if you already have a DVD drive as drive F, it will add another drive named G which will also be a CD/DVD Rom but used only by this program. It will also sit at the system tray area after installation.Windows may also pop up Found New Hardware message during installation.

To mount an image (to open image files) you have to just right click at the magic ISO icon in the system tray.Click at ‘virtual CD/DVD ROM->No media->Mount.It will ask the location of the file which you want to open.Just select the desired file and you are done.It will mount the image file. This process is also shown in the following figure.

Now just go to “My Computer ” and you can open virtual CD/DVD ROM drive as you do with a normal CD/DVD.You can run programs, play games, or listen to music from your virtual CD-ROM.

This program is a Freeware and can handle almost all types of image files such as CIF/NRG/ISO/BIN/DAA etc.

Download MagicDisc

Every now and then we get missed calls from unknown numbers. You can’t say whether it’s from an old friend or any prankster.Due to privacy concerns you can’t get the exact details of a person by the mobile number. But what you can get to know by a mobile number is the region from where the caller is calling.

Here is a site which gives the service. You can enter the first four digits of the mobile number and it will show you the region where the number is registered.By knowing the region you can at least guess the caller.

It seems the site is well updated as it has almost all the numbers –even the new entrants like Aircel or Virgin Mobile.Must check if you get easily disturbed by missed calls.
