Hoax or Real? Plz don’t attend any calls from 7888308001, 9316048121,…

It was just another beep-beep on my mobile some days ago.It was just a message but rather frightening.The message read,

Don’t attend any calls from 7888308001, 9316048121, 9876266211, 9888854137, 9876715587 these numbers come in red colors. U may get brain haemorrhage due to high frequency. 27 persons died just receiving the call. Watch DD news to confirm. Please inform all your friends and relatives soon – its urgent.

As I usually do with mail forwards which tell me to save a child suffering from a disease which nobody knows about and died 3 years ago or not drinking cold drinks in bottles,I ignored it.But as people say,

“Nothing is swifter than rumor.” it’s travelling like wild fire and I got a call from home advising me not to attend any calls from these numbers.

Can it be TRUE??

I checked the numbers.Four of them are mobile numbers and one seems to be a landline or older CDMA number.And here are the some details-

The message is supposed to be originated from Madhya Pradesh but all the numbers belong to Punjab.I am not Sherlock Holmes but let’s have a closer look at the message and see what does it say.

Technical Dissection of the message!

Here are two technical things in this message-

The numbers are displayed in red colour.

Obvious question:How this number will be displayed in RED on a black and white screen mobile.More than 25% of all mobiles users must be having a cheap mobile phone which cannot display colours!

Or we have just invented a technology which converts a black and white screen mobile to a colourful one by the Operator frequency!So we may soon have “Mobile Colouring Service” from operators for just Rs. 30 a month!

U may get brain haemorrhage due to high frequency.

Mobile service operates on standard frequencies such as 900Mhz or 1800 Mhz. When you make or receive a call,you are allotted a frequency from the service operator.Read Wiki or HowStuffWorks if you want to have a detailed explanation of GSM service.

The only point to note is that by no means you can be allotted a certain frequency outside the service frequency range and a frequency which can cause serious brain haemorrhage seems just Illogical.

Watch DD news to confirm!

Poor DD news people!I am sure that they must not be knowing about they are being quoted for this.I am yet to meet any person who saw it himself on DD news.Even if DD news aired this news,it must have been in the name of a HOAX!

I heard that a girl in a city near me got her hands burnt and a poor chap lost his voice attending the calls from these numbers but as I haven’t meet them I can’t say about the authenticity.

So is it hoax or real?

No newspaper has this news,no site has any information about this and I can simply assume is this is just a hoax.If you remember,the World was going to be destroyed in 2009,but we are living in 2010.

How to Backup and Restore Messages,Contacts and Everything from a Nokia Mobile

Having a backup of your mobile phone contacts and data is very important for various reasons.Even if you lose you mobile you can have all the contacts in the backup stored on your computer which can be restored.Or you will need to backup your mobile prior to resetting your phone to factory defaults for various reasons.

Here is how you can take a backup of phonebook contacts,messages ,applicatins,device settings,videos,music and data from a Nokia Mobile.

As already notified Nokia is soon going to replace PC suite with the all new Ovi Suite.So here I have explained how to take a backup of everything using Nokia Ovi Suite.

What you will need–

Latest Version of Nokia Ovi Suite. Download here.
Compatible USB cable to connect your mobile to the computer.
Some amount of courage and patience.

Install and then start Nokia Ovi Suite.You will get the home screen as shown in the following figure.Select “Connect your device” and then proceed as directed to connect your mobile with the computer.

When you have successfully added your phone you will get the message as the following-

When the device is connected .The homepage will show a menu asking for backup or downloading maps.Click on the “Backup” as shown in the figure.

Clicking on the backup link will show a menu which shows the thing to backup.You have to select the things which you want to backup which include-

Calendar,contacts,notes and messages.
Device settings and applications.
Photos,Videos and Music.
Other Documents.

You can also select the folder where you want to keep the backup.By default it will be saved in the My Documents folder.

Select whatever you want to backup and then click next.It will start to prepare the process and then the process starts.

You will be able to see the “backup progress” and a “Backup Successful” message after the backup completes.

This completes the backup process of your complete mobile phone data.The backup is saved in Nokia’s .nbu format.

How to Restore–

Whenever you need to restore this backup-Click on Tools->Restore and select the backup file.It will say “No backup found” if you have not saved the backup on the default location.Click browse to select you backup file and restore.

Using this backup process you data and contacts will be safe even if something happens to your mobile phone.Also remember the rule of backing up-Back up Early,Back up often.

No Gateway Reply on Nokia 5800 and other mobiles-Definitive Steps to solve

“No gateway reply” is a generic Wi-Fi network connection issue in which the mobile does not connect to the gateway,router,hotspot or your wireless ADSL modem.The problem is reported with many Nokia Mobiles such as E61,E51,E63, E65, E66, E71,E73 ,E90, N79 ,N85, N95, N96 and Nokia 5800.

While there are thousands of results on Google for this problem ,all seem to hunt around the problem but the exact solution is missing.One method works for one but not for the other.

Hence here is a step by step definitive troubleshooting guide to No Gateway reply issue on Nokia Mobiles.

“No Gateway Reply”-Getting it Fixed

The problem occurs when you try to connect your Nokia mobile with a Wi-Fi device.It detects a Wi-Fi network and tries to connect to it.If the attempt to connection fails it shows you the Error-No Gateway Reply on your mobile.

The problem may be with your mobile as well as your Router (or any Wi-Fi access point).

How to fix the No Gateway Reply

Once you get this dreaded error proceed as follows to get the error fixed.The steps are divided on the basis of what you have to do on your mobile or on your router.Check for successful connection after every step as anything can work for you.I assume that you KNOW how to surf Internet using Wi-Fi on your mobile.

For easy troubleshooting ,steps are numbered in following way.”M Step 1” means step 1 to be performed in Mobile.”R step 1” means step 1 for router/modem.The correct order to be followed for troubleshooting is M step1->M step2->R step1->R step 2->R step 3->R step 4->R step 5->R step 7->M step 4->M step 5.

What You Have To Do On Your Mobile

M Step1:Reset your phone to factory defaults after making a backup.This is a generic step to clear out any wrong settings or configurations.

M Step2:I Ensure that you have the latest firmware.Check for any available updates for your firmware.The problem is reported to be solved by upgrading firmware by many people for various models.

M Step 3:In this step you will be overriding the default assignment of IP address to the mobile by the router and provide your own IP address. (The following path is given for Nokia 5800,but it’s similar in almost all New Nokia phones.)

Open Menu->Tools->connectivity->Destinations->Internet.

Now select the access point by which you want to connect to Internet.Double tap it to open the settings..Now go to options->Advanced settings->IPv4 Settings.You will get phone IP address and DNS address settings here.Enter the following-

Phone IP address-192.168.1.xx where xx can be anything which falls in range between the address defined in “R step 4”.Also make sure that you are NOT using the same address on your computer.So for safety put it anything above 10.

Phone DNS settings needs to be put now.You have to find it for your router in the following way and put the required settings.

Go to start->run. Type cmd and press Enter.Now type “ipconfig /all” without quotes and press enter.You will be able to get primary and secondary DNS addresses there.Note it down and enter the same in phone DNS settings.An example is given below

Phone ip: 192.168.1.4

Router: 192.168.1.1

Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

Mask: 255.255.255.0

M Step 4:Go to Menu->Settings-Connectivity->Admin Settings->Data Call.Here you get “Online Time” which is by default set to 5 minutes.Set this to unlimited.Please note that if this does not work,restore it to 5 minutes as it can cost you a huge bill if you keep your mobile browser open and leave it unattended.

M step 5: If your router supports you can set you wi-fi connection in Ad-Hoc mode instead of default infrastructure mode.Select the access point in destinations as you did in M step 3 and in advanced settings change the connection mode to Ad-Hoc.

What You Have To Do On Your Wi-Fi Router

R Step1:Reset it to factory defaults.This generic steps solved the No Gateway Reply problem on my Nokia 5800.So this step must be performed before doing anything on your router.

R Step 2:Remove every type of restriction you impose on the name of security.i.e. remove WEP/WPA or any kind of encryption and remove MAC filtering too.Once you are able to connect ,you may proceed further to tighten the security.You can setup security options once you get NO Gateway Reply fixed.

R Step 3:Make sure that you have the latest firmware for your router.Upgrade if new firmware is available for your router model.

R Step 4:Ensure that DHCP is enabled on your router.DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is used to “distribute” the internet connection to various devices.So if you connect to your router with 4 devices on your home,make sure DHCP is enables and the starting and ending address are more than the number of your devices.See the figure below for clarification.For example you can keep the starting address as 192.168.1.1 and ending address as 192.168.1.10 to be used for 9 devices.

R Step 5:Make sure that your router/modem is configured in PPPoE mode for Internet Connection.If it’s configured in Bridge mode-it will not work for sure.If you don’t know what is PPPoE and bridge mode,read it here.It also means that NAT has to be enabled on your router if it has any options for enable/disable NAT.

R step 7:If everything fails then you may be a victim of QoS or WMM settings on the router.In plain English Qos or Quality of service when enabled in a router controls the traffic and maintains a certain level of performance ,based on Bandwidth and Priority for certain protocols.And WMM means the Wi-Fi performance will be acceptable for media related operations like streaming.To know more about Qos here is the wiki link.

If you are still unable to solve the No Gateway Reply problem then you can go for Disabling the QoS or WMM on your router.Most probably this has nothing to do with security and you may not even know that QoS is enabled or disabled.

The method of disabling QoS or WMM varies from router to router.And most probably you have to use Command Line Interface of the router configuration as most of the router do not offer advanced configuration settings on the GUI.

Here is a sample screenshot of ADSL 2+ modem provided by BSNL.As you can see QoS is disabled for each protocol here.It is also possible that your router will not show any QoS parameter in this way.

How to Disable QoS or WMM

You need to use Telnet for this.Click Start->Run and type telnet and press Enter.In Windows Vista Telnet client is not present by default.You have to enable it via Programs and Features on control panel.Read it here if you don’t know how to do it.

When telnet is ready with a prompt.Type Telnet 192.168.1.1.

If your router supports login through telnet you will get a login prompt.Type your login as admin(default in most routers) .Press enter and in the password again enter admin(Again default for most routers.)

Type help.Most routers recognize this command and will show you all the commands you can execute on the router.Depending on the router you may get direct options to set/reset QoS..Search for them and Disable the QoS parameter.

For Thomson Router the commands are straight-

Adminstrator: Administrator

Password:ENTER

:wireless qos config mode=disabled

ENTER

:saveall

And then restart you router.This will disable the QoS parameters.

In case of my router/modem (provided by my ISP)-I was fortunate enough to get a router which offers settings in a simple menu driven interface.

As you can see this modem has options to remove QoS based on classes.QoS classes are defined in terms of minimum performance required for certain applications.

Any of the above steps can solve the No Gateway Reply problem in your mobile.If you get the problem fixed by any step ,kindly let me know in comments with the step number,so more people can be benefitted.Also let me know if you need any further clarification or suggestion.

Nokia PC suite is passé and so are all the suite applications.Nokia is pushing Ovi suite as the only Desktop Application for Nokia Mobiles.This application, still in beta,has been written from scratch and presently support almost 100s of Nokia phones and support for others are being added.

The Ovi suite boasts of new ,fast and sleek interface and is able to do all the functions of older PC suite along with new functionalities.The application is available for download at Nokia Beta Labs.

it was fun to use Ovi suite 2.0 with my Nokia 5800.However being a beta version ,the program has some quirks here and there.I was able to do normal tasks with my phone as with normal PC suite.

How to Use the Inbuilt Task Manager in any Nokia Mobile

Almost all new Nokia Phones come with an inbuilt task manager which lets you see the currently open programs, switch between them or kill them as you do in your computer.

Although there are more powerful task manager for Nokia phones which you can download but in normal cases the default task manager does the job well.

Here is how to use it.

Activation Task Manager in Nokia Mobile

In Nokia 5800,all the running application are shown by a green circle by default, as you can see in the picture below.

Long press the menu key to activate Task Manager.In case of Nokia 5800,press the middle white button.Pressing it for almost 3 seconds will bring the list of all open programs as you can see in the second picture..To open or exit any shown application

select it and tap it for a while(Long Tap)..It will pop up a menu which says either exit or open. You can select exit to kill the application or open to resume application.

For non touch screen mobiles,the steps are same except the last one.When applications are shown,just press “C” to exit it or select the application and press open from the menu keys.
