BSNL GPRS Activation/Deactivation/Plan Change and Settings SMS codes

Here are the SMS codes to be used if you want to activate or deactivate GPRS in your prepaid or postpaid mobile.Please note that for prepaid customers there is no plan but you pay as you use based on the tariff,while the postpaid customer can choose between three plans.

SMS Code for GPRS Activation

Prepaid customers can send message GPRSPRE to 53733.

Postpaid customers can send message to 53733 with the following codes

GPRS49 if you want plan 49.
GPRS199 if you want plan 199.
GPRSZERO if you do now want a rental but pay as you use.

SMS Code for GPRS Postpaid Plan Change

Suppose you are using Plan 49 and want to upgrade to Plan199.Just send a message GPRS199 to 53733 and vice versa.Within 48 hours you will get two messages –first saying that GPRS has been deactivated on your mobile (for plan 49) and second message saying that GPRS has been provisioned on your mobile for (plan199).

SMS Code for GPRS Deactivation

Send a message GPRSD to 53733.May be that you first get a message that,”GPRS has been provisioned”.Within 48 hours you will get a GPRS deactivation confirmation message.

SMS Code for Fetching GPRS Settings for a mobile

To receive settings for GPRS/WAP and MMS send a message to 58355 with your mobile model number.Suppose you have Nokia 6300 send “Nokia 6300” (without quotes) to 58355.If you have an uncommon mobile use any popular model of the same mobile operating system.

How to Setup Internet on PC Through GPRS Enabled Nokia Mobile Using PC suite

You can browse Internet on PC if your mobile has an inbuilt GPRS modem.Most of the modern mobiles which have Internet browsing facility do feature a modem and can be used to get Internet on PC.All you need is a GPRS connection from your mobile operator.

If you have a Nokia mobile and want to setup it for Internet access on computer, all you need is the data cable through which you can connect it to computer and latest version of PC suite installed on your PC.Here is how to setup.

GPRS Internet on PC Through PC Suite

Once you connect your Nokia mobile through data cable and have all the necessary drivers installed -your computer will show you a system tray pop up saying “Nokia xyz is now connected via USB”.Now here are step by step simple instructions to setup internet access.

Step 1

Open Nokia PC suite.And click on “Connect to Internet” as shown on the menu.

Step 2

Click on settings.

Once you click on settings,it will show you the available modem.Suppose you have connected Nokia 6300,it will show you Nokia 6300 modem.Select the modem and click next.

Step 3

Here you get option to either have automatic connection setup depending on the operator or manual settings. Select “configure the connection manually”

Step 4

This is the final step where you have to enter your GPRS access point.

For BSNL North Zone enter access point as “gprsnorth.cellone.in” without quotes.

It will be different for each region.Most probably it is gprswest.cellone.in for West region and so on.

Once you have entered this access point,leave all other fields blank and save and close the settings.All this done- you should be able to connect to Internet when you click connect on the one touch access menu.

Once Internet is connected the OTA(One Touch Access) is minimized to task bar and you can continue browsing.When browsing is over,click the disconnect button(which you used initially to connect).

Please note that browsing at computer will consume more data than normal mobile browsing.So check your plan before you set out for Internet on PC through GPRS.

Getting Internet on PC through GPRS enabled Motorola Mobile

Having GPRS on your mobile is only half of the fun.Most of the mobile handsets are able to act as a modem,so you can surf Internet on your computer.All you need to have is a data cable/Bluetooth link to connect your mobile to your PC and of course GPRS connection on your mobile.

If you have a Motorola mobile and want to get Internet on PC then here is how to do it.You will need a data cable and Motorola Phone Tools, a software suite usually supplied with the mobile.Here it is configured for BSNL GPRS.

Connecting your Motorola Mobile to get Internet on PC

Step by step procedure is as follows.

Step –1

Install Motorola Phone Tools on your computer.When you have installed the application,keep you data cable ready and launch the application.When you run it,it will ask for a profile.Choose default profile and click OK.Phone connection wizard will appear.choose here to connect the phone ‘via cable’.Now connect you data cable.and let it install the mobile phone.When your phone is properly installed ,a figure of your phone will appear on the system tray.For example,my phone is Motorola v3i and it looks like this in the system tray,complete with all the menu.

Step–2

Click on the “Internet Connection” as shown in the figure.Running it for the first time ,it will start an “Internet Connection wizard” .Click next to start configuration.
Click “Create a New Connection” in the next screen” and then GPRS as the type of connection.
On the next screen give a name to your connection say “BSNL GPRS Internet” ,choose your country and operator.If your operator is not listed ,choose other.
In the next step you will be asked to enter your user name and password.If you have a BSNL GPRS connection,leave these fields blank and enter your Access Point Name(APN).For BSNL North zone APN entered here is gprsnorth.cellone.in

In the following settings leave everything to default and do not change anything.

When the wizard completes ,it will say that a new connection has been created .Click on it to launch the connection you just created.

If every setting is correct and GPRS signal is present on your mobile ,the Internet should be connected within seconds.

Once connected it will show as a notification on system tray as shown in the figure

and you can enjoy surfing.The only downside of this GPRS connection is that it is pretty slow.To disconnect or connect again you have to click the same Internet connection shown on your phone picture menu.Comment if you have any difficulty in setting this up and enjoy Internet.

BSNL WAP -General Settings for Nokia Mobiles

A already described BSNL WAP settings are used for Internet access on mobile.Irrespective of a mobile model,BSNL WAP settings are usually the same for all.What differs in each mobile model is place to put settings,i.e. in some mobiles we have to enter it in configuration and in some mobile it has to be put in connection settings.

Here I have outlined the basic WAP settings applicable for all mobiles.

Just head to the place where we have to configure WAP settings.

And the proceed as follows-

WAP SETTINGS for BSNL

Settings –> Connection –> Access Points –> Option –> New Access Point

Connection Name: BSNL_WAP

Data Bearer: Packet Data

APN: wapnorth.cellone.in

User name: LEAVE BLANK

Prompt Password: NO

Password: LEAVE BLANK

Authentication: normal

Advanced Settings-

Phone IP Adress: Automatic

Primary Name Server : 000.000.000.000

Secondary Name Server : 000.000.000.000

Keep other settings unchanged.

BSNL GPRS Settings for Nokia 3230 (and other S60,2nd Edition Mobiles)

Update:

BSNL has changed Access points for many regions.It’s supposed that they are using a unified access point for all India regions.For example,the access point for northern region is no longer ‘gprsnorth.cellone.in’ bus it’s now “bsnlnet“.So kindly use the updated access points if you are unable to get GPRS by using the older access point.

Here manual settings for BSNL GPRS access is presented for Nokia 3230.These settings will work on other mobiles with Series 60, 2nd edition Feature pack 1 platform which include Nokia 7610,6670,6260 and 6620.

Internet on Mobile

You are advised to put manual settings only when you fail to get Internet access using automatic configuration.Before manual settings read automatic configuration settings and FAQs.

If you have already messed up with settings ,then it’s also advised to reset your phone to factory defaults after taking backup.Now here are the settings for BSNL GPRS access.BSNL GPRS Settings

Navigate to the Menu and fill entries as depicted here.User inputs are given in italics.

BSNL GPRS settings-Basic Things to Know Before

There are plenty of resources for BSNL related queries on the Internet.The primary reason being the lack of customer care support.Seems like BSNL is unable to handle such a large number of requests.
However being the largest Telecom Provider in India,it provides almost all services in the nation.Broadband has been provisioned in many parts of India but thousands of villages have still to get it.And there comes GPRS to the rescue.
Automatic configuration method has already been described.But if that fails to make your mobile able to access GPRS,you will need to feed manual settings.In the coming posts I will give manual settings,but before that it’s necessary to digest some jargon and methods.

BSNL sends four different settings when we send a message for automatic configuration.Here is an explanation for them-

BSNL Portal Settings

BSNL portal refers to WAP portal of BSNL i.e. wap.cellone.in.And this setting allows only this single portal to be available on the mobile.This has BSNL galaxy and other stuff like wallpaper,ring tone, animation, themes and videos etc. Browsing this is free but charge is levied when you download them.looks similar to figure below-

BSNL WAP settings
This WAP settings makes your mobile able to browse any wap enabled portal and other sites on the Internet

BSNL GPRS
This is the most important setting.This allows your mobile to browse any website on the Internet.Please note that WAP settings is also for browsing www sites ,but without this GPRS settings you will not be able to surf Internet on your PC/Laptop using your mobile as a modem.

BSNL MMS
Needs no explanation.Needed for MMS.

Update:

Apart from these you will need to know the following

GPRS data-When needed or when available-depends on you,If you have an unlimited connection put it when available and “when needed” otherwise.

Access Points-Varies from BSNL region to region .For example
North region GPRS access point is gprsnorth.cellone.in
West region GPRS access point is gprswest.cellone. in

Following settings need to be entered for advanced configuration only.You may not need to enter these if simple settings can get you GPRS access.

Port no. for GPRS access
port no— 8080 for wap 2.0 devices(Almost all new mobiles)
and 9201, 9401 for wap 1.0 devices.

Proxy IP-
10.132.194.196 (for BSNL north)
192.168.81.163 (for BSNL East)
10.100.3.2(for BSNL west)
10.31.54.2(For BSNL South)

BSNL GPRS Activation and Configuration Settings

If you are a BSNL mobile subscriber and want to get Internet on your mobile through GPRS then you will need to configure your mobile for GPRS access.

But before configuring, you need to get GPRS services activated for your mobile.Earlier this year BSNL has activated GPRS on all prepaid mobiles.So you just need to configure your mobile and go surfing.Postpaid users will need to activate it as there are different plans for postpaid users.However, in case GPRS in not activated by default in your area, you can activate it by sending an SMS as follows,depending on what type of user you are.

BSNL Prepaid

SMS GPRSPRE to 53733 .It can take 24 hrs to get activated and you will get a confirmation message after activation.

BSNL postpaid

After you decide on the plan SMS GPRS49 or GPRS199 to 53733.It can take 24 hrs to get activated and you will get a confirmation message after activation.

Configuration settings for GPRS access

After your activation is done you need to configure your mobile to get GPRS data.You have to send a message to 58355 which contains your mobile model.For example-If you have a Nokia N70 ,SMS “Nokia N70″ to 58355.

Soon you will get WAP,Portal,GPRS and MMS settings from BSNL.Save them all to your mobile.Use either WAP or GPRS as your default access point if your mobile asks for it.

Why are so many settings given for-

BSNL Portal settings -Enables your mobile to browse BSNL WAP portal i.e. http://wap.cellone.in

BSNL WAP settings-Enables your mobile to browse any WAP enabled portal.

BSNL GPRS-Enables your mobile to browse any site on Internet.Moreover this setting is responsible to get Internet on your Laptop/PC using your mobile.

BSNL MMS-Needed to send and receive MMS.

After configuration it’s time to browse the Internet.Opera mini is a better browser than the default one.You can download Opera Mini and then start using it to know why it’s the world’s most popular mobile Web browser.

BSNL GPRS Plans

Broadband is not available in many parts of India.However BSNL, the largest telecommunication service provider has services across all India.So where broadband is not available ,GPRS comes to the rescue for Internet access.At present BSNL has suitable plans for GPRS access for both prepaid and post paid users.

In almost all over India now BSNL prepaid users do not need any activation scheme.They just need to put settings on their mobile and get started to Internet.The usage charges from them will be Rs. 0.02 per KB.

Post paid users have two plans to choose from.The first has Rs. 50 as monthly rental in which you get free 5MB download limit.Usage above 5MB will be charged as Rs. 0.02 per KB.Plan 2 for post paid users is an unlimited usage plan for Rs. 199 monthly.

If you have any other sources of Internet and you want GPRS just for some casual use on mobile, Rs. 50 plan looks sufficient, but if you rely only on GPRS for Internet it’s better to go for Rs. 199 plan.
